Reading Part 1 Additional Qualification Course

I'm learning so much about reading instruction!

The four pillars of a Balanced Reading program:

Read Aloud

  • Above the reading level of the students
  • Begin with activating prior knowledge or providing background
  • Model good fluency, use of punctuation, intonation, and general excitement about reading
  • Model prediction and questioning
Shared Reading
  • Choose one or two specific reading strategies to focus on
  • 10-15 min lesson
  • Read text that all students can see
  • Model the use of specific strategies while reading
Guided Reading
  • Scaffold learning for a small group of students
  • Text is unfamiliar, but within instructional range of students
  • Provide support as students apply learned strategies
  • Record observations and next steps for each student
Independent Reading
  • Students read on their own
  • Reading stamina needs to be built upon at the beginning
  • Accountability is enhanced with discussion questions following reading
  • Storyboarding activities help students consolodate and demonstrate their comprehension
