Reading Part 1 Additional Qualification Course
I'm learning so much about reading instruction!
The four pillars of a Balanced Reading program:
Read Aloud
- Above the reading level of the students
- Begin with activating prior knowledge or providing background
- Model good fluency, use of punctuation, intonation, and general excitement about reading
- Model prediction and questioning
Shared Reading
- Choose one or two specific reading strategies to focus on
- 10-15 min lesson
- Read text that all students can see
- Model the use of specific strategies while reading
Guided Reading
- Scaffold learning for a small group of students
- Text is unfamiliar, but within instructional range of students
- Provide support as students apply learned strategies
- Record observations and next steps for each student
Independent Reading
- Students read on their own
- Reading stamina needs to be built upon at the beginning
- Accountability is enhanced with discussion questions following reading
- Storyboarding activities help students consolodate and demonstrate their comprehension
