Supporting English Language Learners
As students arrive in your classroom with very little English language experience, how can you help them quickly acquire the language skills they need? How can you help them read?
1. Begin with the Essentials
- Provide the words needed in everyday life (bathroom!).
- Use visuals - A picture is worth a thousand words.
- Provide bilingual labels for objects.
2. Build Bridges
- Use prior knowledge as foundation
- Provide dual language assignments
- Connect same language partners
3. Get Them Talking
- Create a supportive environment
- Be patient - most students will go through a silent period
- Encourage partnerships and small group learning
